The story

Thiakry, also known as Dêguê, is widely cherished across Niger, particularly among Fulani pastoralists and in urban centers like Niamey and Tahoua. It is traditionally served during festive evenings, weddings, and to break the fast during the holy month of Ramadan. The technical hallmark of the dish is steaming the rolled pearl millet granules (arraw) twice with a touch of butter, ensuring each grain stays separate and retains a nutty bite before absorbing the sweetened, fermented dairy.
