Baasto Faasoliya (Spiced Spaghetti with White Bean Stew)
An iconic Somali pasta tossed in a rich, xawaash-spiced tomato stew loaded with tender cannellini beans, sweet peppers, and cilantro.
The story
Baasto Faasoliya represents the historic culinary syncretism of southern Somalia, where Italian pasta culture was completely embraced and refashioned by local cooks in Mogadishu, Kismayo, and Merka. Eaten almost universally as a hearty midday lunch, the pasta is never served al dente in the Italian style; rather, it is cooked fully and dressed directly with a spiced, savory bean sugo. A classic Somali mealtime touch is serving this dish alongside a whole ripe peeled banana (moos), sliced into the pasta between bites to balance heat and acidity.
