Chakalaka (Spicy Vegetable Relish)
A fiery, vibrant South African relish of braised peppers, coarse grated carrots, aromatics, and baked beans.
The story
Chakalaka was born in the gold-mining townships surrounding Johannesburg, where mineworkers combined readily available vegetables with canned beans and curry powder into a rich relish to liven up stiff maize porridge (pap). Today, it is an indispensable accompaniment at every South African braai and shisanyama, balancing grilled meats with its sweet, tangy, and picante flavors.
