The story

Denningvleis is widely documented as one of the oldest heritage recipes of the Cape Malay community in the Western Cape, tracing back to the 17th-century spice trade. Prepared traditionally for celebratory Sunday family lunches and Eid feasts, the dish highlights the historic integration of Indonesian tamarind and local Cape game or mutton. An essential technical element is the prolonged, slow browning of onions without scorching, which provides the deep mahogany sauce base and balances the high acidity of the tamarind.
