The story

Among the Bakongo people of Kongo Central province, Lungwila is the indispensable ceremonial elixir poured during customary marriage negotiations and ancestral libation rites. Freshly crushed sugarcane juice is brewed with the bitter bark of the Garcinia kola tree, which clarifies the liquid while regulating wild yeast activity. Historically, master brewers buried the fermenting clay amphoras in damp riverbank loam to maintain a constant cool fermentation temperature beneath the equatorial sun.
