The story

Crafted predominantly by the Teke and Mitsogo communities of southeastern Gabon, Malamba is the defining communal drink served during male initiation retreats and elder assemblies. The artisanal process harnesses whole crushed purple sugarcane whose dense must is tempered by bitter tropical wood bark known locally as Essok or Bois Amer. Historically, the specific proportion of bark added serves a dual purpose: regulating rapid tropical fermentation kinetics while infusing natural antimicrobial compounds.
