The story

Malamba is a revered traditional fermented brew prepared by the Fang and Ndowe peoples of mainland Equatorial Guinea and Annobón for major rites of passage. The beverage relies on cold-pressed wild sugarcane juice steeped with dried strips of *essok* (Garcinia lucida) or *mussoso* bark, which contribute antimicrobial tannins and a distinctive bracing bitterness. Historically, the bark's unique surface microflora acted as the primary starter culture, ensuring a clean, reliable, and pleasantly intoxicating fermentation under humid tropical conditions.
