The story

Harvested from the mopane woodlands of Limpopo, masonja are a cherished ancestral food staple among Venda and Tsonga communities. Eaten daily alongside stiff maize pap, they provide a vital, nutrient-dense source of wild protein and minerals. Traditional harvesters gut and boil the larvae in brine before solar-drying them, a preservation step that gives the worms their distinct smoky, salty baseline flavor.
