The story

Originating from the Lomwe people settled along the fertile slopes of Mount Mulanje, Mtema Kadya is traditionally celebrated during the post-harvest pigeon pea (nandolo) season. Families gather to feast on this hearty, protein-dense relish alongside steaming mounds of nsima during harvest thanksgiving rituals. A critical technical nuance lies in simmering the whole dried peas without salt until fully split, ensuring the starch granules soften completely before the rich savoury tempering is introduced.
