The story

Central to Shona culinary heritage across rural Zimbabwe, Chimukuyu originated as an indispensable preservation technique to stretch cattle yields through the dry winter months (Chando). The dish is commonly prepared for family gatherings and served alongside stiff white sadza to welcome honored guests. Historically, traditional pastoralists air-dried salted strips of lean beef over elevated wire racks or acacia branches, allowing smoke from night fires to deter insects while curing the meat with a subtle, unmistakable rustic woodiness.
