!Nara Paste (Desert Melon Seed Butter)
A rich, nutty, golden seed paste slow-roasted and stone-ground from the endemic Namib Desert !nara melon kernel.
The story
The Topnaar (≠Aonin) Nama people, who have inhabited the harsh lower Kuiseb River valley for centuries, rely on the thorny endemic !Nara melon (Acanthosicyos horridus) as their ultimate life-giving food. Traditionally harvested in sand dunes, the melon seeds (butterpits or tora) are extracted from boiling fruit pulp, sun-dried, and hand-ground into an energizing paste or eaten with roasted game and porridge. Rich in unsaturated fats and high-grade protein, this ancient desert seed butter has sustained pastoralists through severe Namib droughts.
