Nkui (Glutinous Herbal Bark Soup)
A thick, sticky medicinal Bamileke broth drawn from wild bark and seasoned with twelve aromatic woodland spices.
The story
Originating from the Bamileke highlands of Western Cameroon, Nkui is a therapeutic elixir traditionally prepared for women directly after childbirth during puerperium. Consumed without utensils using fingers alongside soft yellow corn couscous, it is revered for stimulating lactation and restorative postpartum healing. Technically, the characteristic stringy mucilage must be manually whipped from soaked Triumfetta bark into warm aromatic decoction; boiling the bark directly over high heat degrades the glycoproteins and destroys its viscous draw.
